Bangkok: The Megacity on a Budget

While Chiang Mai is the relaxed digital nomad hub of the north, Bangkok is the beating heart of Southeast Asia. It's a true global megacity with towering skyscrapers, massive shopping malls, and an incredible nightlife scene, yet it remains astonishingly affordable.

Condos in the Sky

In Bangkok, you can live in a luxury high-rise building with a rooftop infinity pool and a fully-equipped gym for the price of a shared room in London or New York.

  • Modern 1-Bedroom Condo (Sukhumvit area): $500 - $800 per month.
  • Studio Condo slightly further out (On Nut / Phra Khanong): $300 - $450 per month.

Food: The World's Best Street Food

Bangkok is legendary for its food.

  • Street Food Meal (Pad Krapow, Som Tum): $1.50 - $3.00
  • Food Court Meal in a Mall: $2.50 - $4.00
  • Mid-range International Restaurant: $15.00 - $30.00

Transportation

The BTS Skytrain and MRT Subway are clean, air-conditioned, and efficient. A typical ride costs between $1.00 and $1.50. Taxis and Grab (the local Uber) are also very cheap; a 30-minute ride across the city usually costs less than $10.

The Bottom Line

A single expat can live a fantastic, comfortable lifestyle in Bangkok for $1,200 to $1,800 per month. This budget allows for a nice condo, eating out daily, and regular entertainment.
